Below are the 2019 Public Power Lineworkers Rodeo Apprentice event descriptions.

Event 1: Written Test

The 25-minute written test encourages knowledge of safety rules at all times when working in the field and during competitions, such as the Public Power Lineworkers Rodeo. Questions come from specific sections of the 16th edition of the APPA Safety Manual. A high score in this event is crucial for competitors seeking “Overall Apprentice” recognition.

Event 2: Hurtman Rescue

In this event, an individual apprentice rescues a “hurtman” mannequin that is attached to the top of a pole. Event staff will provide groundman support. This annual event reinforces the importance of safety and looking out for each other in the field.

Event #3 - Double Arm Brace Changeout

The apprentice will begin the event without their belt and hooks on.  At the judge's signal, they will assemble all material necessary into a nose bag, don their tools and begin their ascent up the pole.  When a working position has been reached, the apprentice will secure their handline around the pole and will be responsible for the operation of their handline unless equipment is dropped, in which case the judge will act as the groundman.  The apprentice will being changing out the crossarm braces in any order, while maintaining that two braces remain integral at all times.  After all four braces are changed out and the material is lowered to the ground, the handline will be railroaded and a verbal "headache" will be announced.  Time will stop when both feet are on the ground.  Judging will stop when the apprentice has exited the competition area.
